Flareout

Flareout is a term used in aviation to describe the maneuver performed by an aircraft just before landing. It is the upward pitching of the aircraft's nose in the final moments of descent. This action increases the angle of attack of the wings, which in turn increases lift and slows the aircraft's descent rate. The goal of the flareout is to transition the aircraft from a stable descent to a level attitude, or slightly nose-high attitude, just before the wheels touch the runway.

The execution of a flareout varies depending on the aircraft type. For many conventional aircraft, the pilot will gradually increase back pressure on the control column or stick. This action causes the tail of the aircraft to lower and the nose to rise. The timing and amount of pitch are critical. If the flareout is initiated too early or is too aggressive, the aircraft may stall or fly too high off the runway. If it is initiated too late or is insufficient, the aircraft may land too hard or in an undesirable attitude.

Modern aircraft often have advanced flight control systems that can assist with or automate the flareout maneuver, especially in adverse weather conditions or for less experienced pilots. However, the fundamental aerodynamic principles remain the same. A successful flareout is essential for a safe and smooth landing, minimizing stress on the aircraft and providing passenger comfort.
