Flanaess

The Flanaess is the central continent of the world of Oerik in the Dungeons & Dragons Greyhawk campaign setting. It is a vast and varied landmass, bordered by seas and inland waters, with mountain ranges, forests, deserts, and fertile plains. A defining geographic feature is the Nyr Dyv, a large inland lake long associated with ancient legends and powerful magics. The continent hosts a dense patchwork of political entities, from city-states and duchies to kingdoms and confederations, connected by trade routes and shifting alliances rather than fixed borders.

Historically, the Flanaess has seen the rise and fall of great powers. The Great Kingdom of Aerdy loomed as a dominant imperial power in its height, while other polities such as the Free City of Greyhawk, the kingdoms of Nyrond and Veluna, and the duchy of Urnst have competed for influence. In more recent fiction and game lore, Iuz the Evil has carved a dangerous realm in the central region, provoking wars and border realignments during major conflicts such as the Greyhawk Wars. These events have left the political map of the Flanaess in flux and provided a backdrop for ongoing adventures.

Culture and religion in the Flanaess are diverse, reflecting a mix of human and nonhuman peoples, languages, and faiths. The region features a broad pantheon and many local cults, hero legends, and temple complexes.
