Realignments refer to substantial and enduring changes in the patterns of alliance and support among political actors, institutions, or strategic groups. The term is used across political science, organizational theory, and international relations to describe shifts that alter the distribution of power, resources, or influence for an extended period. Realignments can involve changes in party coalitions, state or regional voting patterns, or the alignment of international blocs, and they typically emerge after cumulative political, social, or economic and structural forces.

In politics, realignments describe long-term changes in party coalitions and issue emphasis. They often follow or produce electoral realignments—episodes in which a critical election or a series of elections reconfigure who supports which party and why. Causes may include demographic change, migration, policy crises, or social movements, and the new alignment often persists for decades. Classic examples cited in Western democracies include the American realignments of 1860, 1932, and the civil-rights era realignment beginning in the mid-1960s, which reshaped regional and demographic support for major parties.

Beyond elections, realignments occur in organizations and states’ foreign relations. Corporate or governmental reorganizations realign resources, functions, and leadership to match new strategic priorities. Military realignments reorganize forces, bases, or doctrine to reflect updated threats or technology. Internationally, allied or bloc realignments alter alliance commitments and strategic alignments in response to security challenges and changing power distributions.

Realignments are debated among scholars, particularly the concepts of critical elections and dealignment, and they may be gradual or abrupt, with effects that persist long after the initiating events.
