Fixturesor

Fixturesor is a proposed open-standard framework for cataloging, exchanging, and interoperating information about physical fixtures used in architecture, interior design, and related fields. It envisions a unified data model that can describe a wide range of items—such as lighting fixtures, faucets, hardware, fixtures for ceilings and walls, and other architectural components—along with their specifications, performance data, and installation guidelines.

The core idea of fixturesor is to provide a consistent schema that supports rich metadata, including dimensions, materials, finishes, energy and safety certifications, mounting and connection details, weight, compatibility, lifecycle status, and provenance. The standard aims to enable accurate product representation across design tools, procurement platforms, construction management systems, and retailers. Features often envisioned for fixturesor include versioning, multilingual metadata, robust search and filtering, and APIs that allow seamless import and export of data to CAD/BIM software, product catalogs, and digital twins.

Adoption would facilitate better collaboration among manufacturers, designers, engineers, and contractors by reducing data gaps and misinterpretations. It would support workflow automation for specification writing, procurement, and compliance checks, while helping to maintain up-to-date product information through controlled lifecycles. While theoretical at present, fixturesor is discussed in industry forums as a potential complement or successor to existing data exchanges, intended to improve interoperability among diverse software ecosystems.
