Fidelio
Fidelio is Ludwig van Beethoven’s only opera, a German-language dramatic work in two acts that was revised in 1814 from an earlier 1805 version titled Leonore. It is based on Léonore, ou la femme loyale by Jean-Nicolas Bouilly, with a libretto prepared by Joseph Sonnleithner and later revisions. The action is set in a Seville prison in the 17th century and centers on Leonore, who disguises herself as a young man named Fidelio to secure justice for her husband Florestan, who is wrongfully imprisoned by the tyrannical jailer Pizarro. Supporting characters include Rocco, the jailer, his daughter Marzelline, and Don Fernando, a governor’s representative. The opera explores themes of courage, fidelity, and the struggle against oppression.
