1805 was a pivotal year in the Napoleonic Wars, marked by a sequence of campaigns that reshaped Europe and a decisive shift in continental power. The Third Coalition formed against Napoleon, and his forces pursued a rapid series of victories that culminated in major political and territorial realignments.

From September to October, Napoleon executed the Ulm Campaign, culminating in the surrender of the Austrian army under General Karl Mack at Ulm. This achieved a stunning strategic feat, enabling French forces to advance and force Austria into peace negotiations. In October the British Royal Navy scored a decisive victory at the Battle of Trafalgar, where Admiral Horatio Nelson defeated the combined French and Spanish fleets; Nelson died in the battle, but the victory established British naval supremacy for the remainder of the era.

In December, Napoleon’s forces achieved a decisive land victory at the Battle of Austerlitz, near Slavkov u Brna. The Battle of Austerlitz is often cited as one of Napoleon’s greatest achievements, leading to the collapse of the Third Coalition and a sweeping reorganization of European power. The peace that followed was formalized with the Treaty of Pressburg on December 26, which imposed terms on Austria and reshaped Central European borders and influence.

The year also saw the establishment of the Kingdom of Italy as a client state of the French Empire, with Napoleon as king and Eugène de Beauharnais as viceroy, signaling a formal administrative reorganization of northern Italian territories under French influence. The political realignments of 1805 contributed to the emergence of the Confederation of the Rhine and foreshadowed the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806.
