Jean Nicolas was a French mathematician and historian, best known for his work on Roman antiquities and his contributions to the field of probability theory. He was born in 1725 in the province of Picardy, France, and his early life is not well documented.

Nicolas's mathematical work focused primarily on the study of games of chance and the development of new mathematical methods to analyze them. He published several papers on probability theory, including a notable work on the subject in 1760. His contributions helped lay the foundation for later mathematicians, such as Pierre-Simon Laplace, who built upon his ideas.

In addition to his mathematical work, Jean Nicolas was also a historian and antiquarian who dedicated himself to the study of Roman antiquities. He compiled a comprehensive catalog of the architectural remains of the ancient city of Leptis Magna, in what is now modern-day Libya. His research on this topic was groundbreaking and provided new insights into the history and culture of the ancient Roman Empire.

Throughout his life, Nicolas was respected for his knowledge and dedication to his field. He was a fellow of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres in Paris and was elected as a member of the Royal Society in London in 1758. Unfortunately, his life was marked by professional setbacks and personal challenges, which ultimately led to his early death in 1738.
