An antiquarian is a person who studies or collects antiquities—artifacts, inscriptions, manuscripts, coins, and other objects of historical interest. The term also refers to the field of antiquarianism, a historical approach that emphasizes careful description, documentation, and interpretation of sources and material remains. In its older sense, an antiquarian may be more focused on collection and cataloging than on theoretical explanation. The adjective antiquarian describes things relating to antiquities or their study.

Origin and development: Antiquarianism emerged in medieval and early modern Europe. In Britain it flourished in the 16th to 18th centuries with scholars such as John Leland and William Camden, who produced topographical and historical works and inventories of manuscripts and monuments. The formation of learned societies, including the Society of Antiquaries of London (founded 1707), helped institutionalize the field. Antiquarian methods laid groundwork for later archaeology and historical geography, even as some contemporaries emphasized national antiquities, genealogies, or heraldry.

Modern usage: The term can refer to scholars who study historical sources and material culture, or to collectors and dealers in antiquities and antiquarian books. Antiquarian collecting remains a common context, with antiquarian booksellers specializing in rare and valuable volumes. In contemporary scholarship, antiquarian approaches are often integrated with critical methods such as provenance research and contextual analysis to distinguish enduring historical value from mere curiosity.
