Seville

Seville is a city in southern Spain, the capital of the autonomous community of Andalusia and of the province of Seville. It lies on the Guadalquivir River, inland from the Atlantic, and is one of the country’s largest and most historic urban centers. The historic core, including the cathedral, the Real Alcázar, and the Archivo General de Indias, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site designated in 1987.

Prominent landmarks in Seville include Seville Cathedral (Catedral de Santa María de la Sede), the Giralda bell tower, and the Real Alcázar, a royal palace noted for its Mudéjar architecture. The Archivo General de Indias houses important documents from Spain’s colonial era. The Plaza de España, located in Maria Luisa Park, is a well-known example of regionalist architecture. The Santa Cruz quarter and the nearby Triana neighborhood are historic districts, and the city also features contemporary structures such as the Metropol Parasol.

Historically, the site was known as Hispalis in Roman times and later developed under Moorish rule before being reconquered in the 13th century. In the 16th and 17th centuries Seville was a leading port for Spain’s transatlantic trade, supported by the Casa de Contratación, which directed American exploration and commerce.

Seville hosts a rich cultural calendar, including Semana Santa (Holy Week) processions and the Feria de Abril (April Fair). Flamenco is strongly associated with the region, and the city is renowned for its tapas and regional cuisine.

Climatewise, Seville has a hot Mediterranean climate with very hot summers and mild winters. The economy relies on services, tourism, and logistics, benefiting from the Guadalquivir port and connections via Seville’s Santa Justa railway station and high-speed rail.
