Feszültségkonvertereknek, often translated as voltage converters, are electronic devices that change the voltage level of an electrical power source. They are essential components in many electronic systems, enabling devices to operate with different voltage requirements than their power supply provides. There are several types of voltage converters, broadly categorized into linear and switching converters.

Linear voltage converters are simpler in design and operate by dissipating excess voltage as heat. While they produce a clean and low-noise output, they are generally inefficient, especially when the voltage difference between input and output is large. This inefficiency leads to significant power loss and heat generation, making them less suitable for battery-powered applications or high-power scenarios. Common examples include voltage regulators like the LM78xx series.

Switching voltage converters, also known as switch-mode power supplies (SMPS), are significantly more efficient. They operate by rapidly switching a power element (like a transistor) on and off, storing energy in inductors and capacitors. By controlling the duty cycle of the switching, they can either increase (boost converter), decrease (buck converter), or invert (inverting converter) the input voltage. Their high efficiency makes them ideal for a wide range of applications, from mobile phone chargers to large industrial power supplies. However, they can introduce switching noise into the output, which may require additional filtering. The choice between linear and switching converters depends on factors such as efficiency requirements, desired output voltage accuracy, noise sensitivity, and cost.
