Fertilization-ready is a non-technical, descriptive term used to indicate that a gamete or embryo has reached a state that makes successful fertilization possible. While not a formal diagnostic category, it is commonly used in reproductive biology, fertility clinics, and related research to describe the readiness of cells to participate in fertilization.

In the context of sperm, fertilization readiness involves capacitation, a series of physiological changes that enable sperm to acquire the ability to penetrate and fertilize an egg. Capacitated sperm exhibit changes in motility and membrane properties, and they must undergo acrosome reactions in response to the zona pellucida of the oocyte to achieve fertilization. The concept is often discussed in relation to both natural conception and assisted reproductive technologies (ART).

For oocytes (eggs), fertilization readiness generally refers to maturational status. A mature oocyte has typically completed meiosis I and is at or beyond metaphase II, with extrusion of the first polar body indicating readiness for fertilization. In practice, readiness is assessed in clinics by timing relative to ovulation, stimulation protocols, and laboratory evaluations that may include morphological criteria and, in some cases, imaging or molecular markers.

In clinical and research settings, fertilization readiness guides decisions about when to perform fertilization procedures, such as conventional IVF or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). The term is context-dependent and can vary by species, laboratory protocols, and the fertility goals of individuals or couples. It emphasizes a state of functional competence rather than a single universal criterion.
