Fendant

Fendant is a Swiss white wine produced primarily in the Valais canton from the Chasselas grape. In Valais, the wine is widely known simply as Fendant, while in other regions the grape is more commonly referred to as Chasselas. The term Fendant du Valais is used as an official designation for white wines from this region made with Chasselas.

Grape and production: Chasselas is a late-ripening variety well suited to Valais’ sun-drenched slopes and cool nights. Vintners often ferment and age Fendant in stainless steel to preserve its fresh character, though a small number of examples may see oak influence. The style ranges from light and brisk to slightly fuller-bodied, but most examples remain dry and high in acidity.

Wine characteristics: Fendant wines typically show a pale straw color with subtle fruity and floral aromas. Common notes include green apple, pear, citrus, and almond blossom, with a crisp, mineral finish that enhances their refreshing profile. Alcohol levels are generally moderate.

Pairings and serving: Fendant is traditionally paired with Swiss alpine cuisine, especially fondue and raclette, as well as lighter fare such as seafood, salads, and poultry. It is commonly served chilled, making it a popular table wine for social meals and regional celebrations.

Regional significance: Valais is the leading white-wine region in Switzerland, and Fendant remains one of the canton’s best-known and most exported products. The wine is valued for its versatility, food-friendliness, and the way it reflects the Alpine terroir of the Rhône valley.
