Feldbegehungen

Feldbegehungen are systematic on-site visits to observe, measure and document physical conditions, processes or phenomena in the field. They are used across disciplines such as archaeology, geology, ecology, forestry, agriculture, and civil engineering to collect data, verify hypotheses, assess conditions, or support planning.

In archaeology, field surveys help identify surfaces, artifacts, and features, determine site extent, and evaluate preservation. In geology and geography they support mapping of rock units, faults, soils, hydrology, and land use. In ecology and forestry they document species, habitat structure, vegetation, and disturbance. In civil engineering and environmental planning they inform feasibility, safety, and impact assessment.

Planning and execution involve defining objectives, choosing sampling strategies (grid, transects, or targeted walks), obtaining permits and safety plans, and preparing equipment such as maps, GPS devices, notebooks, cameras, measuring tools, and sampling kits. On site, observers record qualitative impressions and quantitative data, georeferenced notes, photographs, sketches, and collect samples as needed. Data are often integrated into GIS, databases or spreadsheets.

Quality and safety considerations include standardized procedures, instrument calibration, and documentation of uncertainties. Weather, terrain and access constraints may affect results. Ethical and legal aspects include respecting protected areas and cultural heritage.

Deliverables are field reports, maps, site plans, checklists, and datasets used for analysis, monitoring, or decision-making. Feldbegehungen provide a foundational, on-the-ground basis for interpretation, planning, and applied research across many domains.
