Fassadenlatten

Fassadenlatten are thin, elongated boards used as a substructure for exterior façade cladding. They create a ventilated, drained cavity behind the outer cladding, helping to manage moisture, accommodate movement from temperature changes, and provide a stable fixing grid for panels.

Materials commonly used include timber (softwood or hardwood; often treated for exterior exposure) and metal options such as aluminium or galvanized steel. Composite battens are also available for specific systems.

Installation involves attaching the battens to a structural wall or to an internal weather barrier via a supporting substructure. The battens define the fixing grid, determine the ventilation gap, and allow concealed or exposed fixing of the cladding. Fasteners should be corrosion-resistant and compatible with the batten material. The spacing and batten size depend on the chosen cladding, wind loads, and climate, and edge details are flashed to protect against moisture intrusion.

Timber battens require maintenance: treatment, sealing, and periodic inspection for rot and insect damage. Metal battens are typically more durable but still require proper coatings and drainage paths. A properly ventilated facade relies on correct detailing, flashing, and air flow to minimize moisture problems.

They can be oriented horizontally or vertically and are used with a wide range of cladding materials, from timber and fiber cement to metal panels. The term Fassadenlatten is often used to describe the substructure in facade construction and is related to the broader concept of lathing and ventilation-enabled facades.
