Fasettleder

Fasettleder is a term used in some German-language leathercraft and fashion contexts to describe leather finished with a faceted, multi-angled surface. The name derives from Fasetten (facets) and Leder (leather). The usage is not standardized and can vary by producer, region, and trend.

Production methods: The base hide is tanned by conventional methods. To create the facet texture, manufacturers apply mechanical processes such as engraving, scoring, embossing, laser etching, or stamping with a facet pattern, sometimes combined with selective abrasion. The surface may then be dyed or pigmented and finished with protective coatings to secure durability and a uniform look.

Characteristics: Fasettleder emphasizes a textured, reflective surface that adds visual depth and grip. The exact appearance depends on the facet geometry, the thickness of the hide, and the finishing coat. The texture can make scratches more conspicuous and may influence flexibility, particularly in lighter-weight leathers.

Applications: The finish is used in fashion accessories like belts, wallets, and bags, as well as in footwear and, less commonly, interior upholstery and automotive trim. It is valued for its distinctive look and tactile quality rather than traditional smoothness.

Care: Cleaning should be gentle, using soft cloths and appropriate leather cleaners. Avoid harsh solvents. Reconditioning or reapplying protective wax may be recommended depending on the finish and use.
