Fasesiirtokatalyyttinä, commonly known as phase transfer catalysis (PTC), is a technique used in chemistry to facilitate the reaction between reactants that exist in different phases, typically an aqueous phase and an organic phase. This method allows reactions that would otherwise be very slow or impossible to occur efficiently.

The core principle of phase transfer catalysis involves a catalyst that can transport one of the reacting species from its native phase into the phase where the other reactant resides. This is usually achieved by a phase transfer catalyst that is soluble in both phases or can shuttle between them. For instance, a common scenario involves an ionic reactant in an aqueous phase and an organic reactant in an organic phase. A phase transfer catalyst, often a quaternary ammonium or phosphonium salt, can pair with the aqueous anion, making it soluble in the organic phase. Once in the organic phase, this "solubilized" anion can react with the organic substrate.

The catalyst then returns to the aqueous phase to pick up another ion, thereby completing the catalytic cycle. This process significantly increases the reaction rate by overcoming the limitations of interfacial contact between the two immiscible phases. Phase transfer catalysis offers several advantages, including milder reaction conditions, higher yields, reduced waste, and the avoidance of expensive or hazardous solvents. It is widely applied in organic synthesis for various transformations, such as alkylations, oxidations, reductions, and polymerizations.
