Farvatööstuses, often translated as "fur industry," encompasses the collection, processing, and sale of animal pelts and hides for use in clothing, accessories, and decorative items. Historically, it has been a significant economic activity in many regions, particularly those with abundant wildlife. The industry relies on a variety of sources for its raw materials, including wild trapping and domesticated fur farming.

Wild trapping involves the capture of animals such as foxes, minks, beavers, and coyotes using traps. This practice is often regulated by governments to ensure sustainable harvesting and prevent species depletion. Fur farming, on the other hand, involves raising animals like mink, chinchilla, and foxes specifically for their pelts. This method allows for greater control over the quality and quantity of fur produced.

The processing of pelts is a multi-step procedure. It typically begins with skinning the animal, followed by cleaning, preserving, and dressing the hide to make it supple and durable. Tanning, a crucial stage, involves treating the skins to prevent decay and improve their texture.

The fur industry has faced considerable scrutiny and criticism from animal welfare organizations and the public due to ethical concerns surrounding animal trapping and farming practices. This has led to a decline in demand for fur in some markets and an increase in the development and adoption of alternative materials, such as faux fur. Despite these challenges, the fur industry continues to operate, albeit with evolving practices and varying levels of consumer acceptance globally.
