Factory-installed describes components or software that are installed by the manufacturer during production or before the product reaches the customer, rather than added by the end user after purchase. The term is commonly used for devices, vehicles, appliances, and software configurations, and is often contrasted with user-installed or post-purchase additions.

In consumer electronics, factory-installed software includes the operating system, drivers, and bundled applications supplied by the manufacturer; factory-installed hardware options can include extra memory, larger storage, or integrated components such as a camera, wireless module, or biometric sensor. In automobiles, factory-installed options refer to features chosen at production time—such as navigation systems, upgraded upholstery, or advanced driver-assistance features—that are included when the vehicle ships.

Benefits and considerations include ensuring compatibility with the device’s hardware, a consistent user experience, and straightforward warranty coverage, as well as easier initial setup. Drawbacks can include unwanted software (bloatware), higher upfront cost, and reduced flexibility for customization after purchase.

Practical considerations include potential impacts on warranties or licensing if the user modifies factory-installed components. Some pre-installed software or hardware may be difficult or impossible to remove, and updates can modify the original configuration, for better or worse.
