A Fachhochschule, commonly abbreviated FH, is a type of higher education institution found in German-speaking countries that emphasizes applied sciences and professional practice. They offer programs in fields such as engineering, computer science, business, design, social work, and health. Historically many German Fachhochschulen awarded Diplom degrees; since the Bologna Process, most programs issue Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, with some professional certificates still available in certain fields. In Austria and Switzerland the term Fachhochschule remains widely used and corresponds to a University of Applied Sciences.
