FX

Fx, often written as FX, is an abbreviation used in several unrelated fields. The meaning depends on context, with the most common uses relating to effects, finance, and media branding.

In film, television, and video production, FX denotes effects. This can encompass practical or physical effects built on set (such as makeup, prosthetics, and pyrotechnics) as well as digital enhancements created in post-production. The term is frequently used alongside VFX (visual effects) and SFX (special effects), which differentiate computer-generated imagery from on-set effects, though FX is commonly used as a general label for any kind of effect work.

In audio production, FX refers to sound effects applied to audio tracks. Effects processors, plug-ins, and effect pedals label these modifications, which can include reverb, delay, distortion, filtering, and modulation to alter a sound’s character.

In finance, FX stands for foreign exchange, the global market for trading currencies. FX rates indicate how much of one currency is needed to buy another, and FX risk or hedging involves managing exposure to exchange-rate fluctuations that can affect international trade and investment.

FX is also the name of a U.S. cable television channel, FX Networks, founded as Fox FX and later rebranded. Owned by Disney, the network focuses on original dramas and comedies as well as acquired programming, and operates under the broader FX Networks umbrella with international variations.
