F5E

F5E refers to the F-5E Tiger II, an upgraded variant of the Northrop F-5 Freedom Fighter. The F-5E designation is associated with a mid- to late-20th-century family of light, supersonic fighters used by numerous air forces for air defense, patrol, and ground-attack roles.

Development and design improvements over the F-5A/B included a redesigned airframe with a larger vertical stabilizer, aerodynamic refinements, increased fuel capacity, and an updated avionics suite. The radar and fire-control system were typically enhanced to improve target detection and engagement capabilities, and the cockpit received modernized instruments and controls to support more capable missions. The F-5E retained the lightweight, inexpensive platform characteristics that made the F-5 family popular with allied nations.

Armament and capabilities varied by operator, but the F-5E generally carried a combination of air-to-air missiles, such as AIM-9 Sidewinders, and air-to-ground ordnance, including bombs and rockets. Some configurations retained an internal 20mm cannon.
