Airtoair is a term that appears in some sources as a condensed form of air-to-air, referring to the operations, systems, and technologies involved in engagements between aircraft during flight. The standard spelling in most aerospace literature is air-to-air, with hyphens. The term typically encompasses two primary domains: air-to-air missiles used to defeat aerial targets and air-to-air refueling that extends mission range and time on station.

Air-to-air missiles are guided weapons launched from one aircraft to engage another airborne platform. They include short-range infrared-guided missiles (heat-seeking), as well as medium- and long-range radar-guided designs capable of beyond-visual-range engagements. Modern AAMs often use active radar terminals or semi-active guidance and can be integrated with aircraft sensors, data links, and networked targeting.

Air-to-air refueling (AAR) enables aircraft to receive fuel in flight from tanker aircraft, significantly expanding range and endurance. Replenishment is achieved through boom systems or hose-and-drogue configurations. Tankers such as the KC-135 Stratotanker, KC-10 Extender, and KC-46 Pegasus serve with various air forces, enabling extended patrols and rapid long-distance deployment.

Historically, air-to-air capabilities have shaped air superiority doctrine, from early dogfighting to modern networked warfare. The development of effective AAMs and robust AAR capability has influenced tactics, force structure, and strategic planning.
