Groundattack refers to military operations aimed at defeating enemy forces, installations, or logistics on the ground. The term is most often used to describe aerial or mixed-domain actions designed to destroy or degrade ground targets, but it can also refer to other means such as artillery or missiles. In modern parlance, ground-attack missions are typically conducted to support friendly ground troops, disrupt an opponent’s advance, or interdict supply lines.

In air warfare, ground-attack is commonly distinguished from air superiority and strategic bombardment. Close air support (CAS) is a primary form of ground-attack activity conducted in proximity to friendly ground forces, while interdiction seeks to disrupt the enemy’s warfighting capability before it can influence operations, often at greater depth and without direct contact with supported units. Ground-attack aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned systems are employed in varying degrees of survivability, endurance, and precision.

Platforms and munitions have evolved toward greater precision. Modern ground-attack forces rely on precision-guided munitions, smart bombs, and stand-off missiles to reduce collateral damage and civilian risk, alongside earlier unguided bombs and rockets. Aircraft such as dedicated ground-attack planes and multirole fighters, as well as attack helicopters and drones, play key roles depending on doctrine, terrain, and threat environment.

Operational challenges include air defense, weather, and the need for accurate targeting data. Ground-attack planning emphasizes coordination with ground forces, suppression of enemy air defenses, and integration with artillery and other fires to achieve joint firepower effects.
