Firepower is the capacity to inflict damage or destruction on an adversary using weapons and ammunition. It encompasses not only the lethality of individual weapons but also the volume and speed with which fire can be delivered and the ability to direct it accurately. Firepower is shaped by weapon design, ammunition types, platforms, and the effectiveness of fire-control and targeting systems.

Components include direct-fire weapons such as rifles, machine guns, anti-tank missiles; indirect-fire systems such as artillery, mortars, and rocket artillery; missiles and aircraft; naval guns; and the platforms that carry them, from infantry squads to ships and aircraft. Munitions vary from small arms ammunition to precision-guided munitions and area-effect bombs. Modern firepower relies on integrated fire-control networks, sensors, surveillance, communications, and logistics to synchronize fire across domains.

In doctrine, firepower is weighed against mobility, protection, and sustainment. Key performance metrics include range, accuracy, rate of fire, firing duration, and total ammunition supply, as well as target selection, reliability, and crew training. Advances such as precision-guided munitions, smart munitions, and networked warfare have increased effective firepower while aiming to reduce collateral damage.

Applications and considerations include deterrence, force multiplication, urban operations, and arms-control debates. The pursuit of greater firepower can influence strategic calculation, escalation risk, and civilian harm, underscoring the ethical and legal dimensions of its use.
