F280x

The F280x is a family of Texas Instruments microcontrollers within the C2000 real-time control MCU family, designed for high-performance motor control, power electronics, and other demanding control-loop applications. The devices target precise, low-latency control with dedicated peripherals that support fast feedback and actuation.

Core technology and architecture: F280x devices are built around a 32-bit fixed-point C28x digital signal processor core, often paired with a Control Law Accelerator (CLA) that can execute control algorithms in parallel with the main CPU. This arrangement enables high-throughput execution of motor-control loops, sensor processing, and protection routines while maintaining deterministic timing. The family incorporates on-chip memory, including flash for program storage and RAM for data, with various device options that may also offer boot ROM and flexible boot modes.

Peripherals and features: To support real-time control, F280x chips provide high-resolution PWM modules for motor drives, multiple ADC channels for fast sampling of analog signals, and interfaces such as CAN, SCI (serial communications), SPI, and I2C for communication with sensors, peripherals, and other controllers. Enhanced quadraphr encoder pulse (QEP) interfaces support motor-position sensing. Additional features often include interrupt control, direct memory access, and various timers and capture/compare units to support timing-critical control tasks.

Development and ecosystem: TI supplies development tools and libraries for the F280x family, including Code Composer Studio (CCS) and the C2000Ware software package. Evaluation boards and launch pads are available to prototype motor-control applications and power-conversion systems.

Applications: The F280x is used in motor drives, servo systems, DC-DC and AC-DC converters, inverters, and other real-time control applications where fast, deterministic control is essential.
