Extortiontightening is a term used in political economy and criminology to describe a pattern in which coercive demands by powerful actors are reinforced by concurrent tightening of control mechanisms, creating a feedback loop that enhances the reach and effectiveness of extortion. The concept emphasizes how threats and intimidation are complemented by procedural or institutional hardening that makes resistance more costly or unlikely. It is not a universally standardized term but appears in analyses of governance, corruption, and organized crime to capture the interaction between coercion and control.

The mechanisms of extortiontightening include explicit or implicit threats to cut access to services, legal penalties, or social repercussions, paired with intensified surveillance, bureaucratic bottlenecks, asset tracing, and expanding regulatory or punitive powers. By raising the cost of noncompliance and narrowing avenues for resistance, extortion becomes more sustainable for actors who wield power. Digital tools—such as data gathering, monitoring, and targeted enforcement—often play a central role, enabling more precise coercion and swift punishment.

Contexts where extortiontightening is discussed include authoritarian or fragile states, where weak institutions allow rulers or organized groups to extract resources while simultaneously constricting political or economic freedom. It is also examined in studies of corruption, predatory governance, and high-risk corruption networks that exploit both coercive leverage and formal mechanisms.

Critics argue that the concept can conflate motives of security, order, or efficiency with predatory practices, and that robust institutions are needed to counteract entrenchment.
