The framework emphasizes portability, isolation, and secure extension management.

Origins and concept: The term Extensonen was introduced in educational literature to illustrate how a uniform extension protocol could coordinate heterogeneous components. It is not tied to a single vendor or hardware platform; instead, it specifies interfaces and behaviours that extensions must implement.
