EuroPalettenstandard

The EuropalettenStandard, commonly called the Euro pallet or EUR-pallet, designates the standardized wooden pallet used across Europe for handling, stacking, and transport of goods. The standard is defined by the European Pallet Association (EPAL) and enforced by licensed manufacturers to ensure interchangeability and consistent performance in modern logistics.

The standard footprint is 1200 by 800 millimeters, with a typical height around 144 millimeters. The pallet’s construction includes a top deck and bottom deck supported by nine timber blocks that allow forklift entry from all four sides. It is usually made from softwood that meets specific timber grades and durability requirements. Pallets from EPAL-certified producers carry markings, such as the EPAL insignia and an identifying code.

Load-bearing characteristics vary with construction and condition, but commonly cited figures indicate a static load around 1500 kilograms and a dynamic load around 1000 kilograms; exact values depend on usage, repair status, and the pallet’s condition. For international shipments, EUR-pallets may bear the ISPM 15 mark, indicating heat treatment or fumigation compliance to mitigate pest risk and enable cross-border movement.

History and adoption: the EuropalettenStandard emerged to simplify European trade and logistics, with EPAL establishing formal specifications and certification in the late 20th century. Pallets can be repaired, refurbished, and re-certified to extend life. The standard promotes efficiency by ensuring compatibility with a wide range of handling equipment, storage systems, and pallet pools across different countries and industries.
