Etäpääteohjelmat, known in English as remote terminal programs or clients, are software applications that allow users to connect to and interact with a remote computer or server. These programs facilitate access to resources and functionalities located on a distant machine as if the user were physically present at its terminal.

The most common protocol used by etäpääteohjelmat is SSH (Secure Shell). SSH encrypts the entire communication session, ensuring that data transmitted between the client and server, including login credentials and commands, remains confidential and protected from eavesdropping. Older protocols like Telnet also exist but are generally discouraged due to their lack of encryption, making them insecure for sensitive data.
