Epoxyresiinien, commonly referred to as epoxy resins, are a class of reactive thermosetting polymers containing epoxide groups that cure to form crosslinked networks. They are typically based on glycidyl ethers such as diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) or similar structures and are combined with curing agents to initiate hardening.

Curing involves ring-opening polymerization triggered by hardeners such as amines, anhydrides, or phenolics, producing covalent crosslinks. There are one-component and two-component systems; cure temperature and time depend on formulation. Some systems require heat to reach full cure, and the process is often exothermic.

Key properties include strong adhesion to metals and polymers, excellent chemical and moisture resistance, high mechanical strength, and good electrical insulation. However, many epoxies are relatively brittle when unmodified and can be sensitive to UV light and heat. Formulation strategies, such as adding tougheners or UV stabilizers, are used to tailor performance for specific applications.

Major applications include protective coatings, structural adhesives, and composite matrices for fiber-reinforced polymers (aircraft, wind turbines, automotive parts), electronics encapsulation, and potting compounds. Specialized epoxy resins address low-temperature cure, high-temperature performance, or increased flexibility.

Processing and safety: Storage stability varies; mixed systems should be used within pot life. Handling requires gloves and eye protection, as uncured resins can cause skin sensitization. Cured epoxy is generally inert but not easily recycled; some formulations pursue bio-based or more sustainable components.

History and outlook: Epoxy resins were developed in the mid-20th century, with commercial products based on glycidyl ethers of bisphenol A. They remain widely used due to performance and versatility, with ongoing developments in toughness, UV stability, and sustainability.
