Entartungen

Entartungen (German: literal plural of "Entartung", usually translated as "degenerations") denotes processes, conditions or instances described as a decline from an assumed original, normal or healthy state. The term has been applied in medical, biological, cultural and political contexts, often carrying a strongly negative and normative judgment.

In 19th- and early 20th-century medicine and anthropology, degeneration theories proposed that hereditary, environmental or moral factors could produce progressive decline in physiology, behavior or social capacity. Such theories influenced psychiatry, criminology and early eugenic movements, but were later discredited as unscientific and tied to prejudicial assumptions.

The term acquired particular historical infamy in political and cultural discourse. In Nazi Germany, "Entartung" was institutionalized to label and suppress art, music, literature and individuals judged incompatible with the regime’s ideology. The 1937 "Entartete Kunst" (degenerate art) exhibition showcased confiscated modernist works to stigmatize them and facilitate censorship, exclusion and persecution. That usage functioned as propaganda and as part of broader discriminatory policies.

Today "Entartungen" is used more cautiously, typically in historical, critical or academic discussion to describe past doctrines, campaigns and their consequences. The concept is generally regarded as rooted in pseudoscience and ideology rather than objective analysis, and its historical legacy is studied as an example of how scientific language can be mobilized to justify exclusion and abuse.
