Institutionalized is an adjective meaning relating to, or characteristic of, an institution, or the process by which something or someone becomes part of or adapted to an institution. As a verb, to institutionalize means to place under the authority of an institution or to establish formal routines and practices within an organization.

In sociology and psychology, institutionalization refers to the process by which individuals adapt to the routines, rules, and norms of long-term institutional living, such as in hospitals, prisons, or orphanages. This adaptation can involve a reduction in self-direction and autonomy and the development of dependent behaviors. The term is sometimes used pejoratively to describe individuals who have become overly compliant or disconnected from wider society; modern usage often emphasizes rehabilitation and person-centered approaches to autonomy and reintegration.
