Engangsskjeer

Engangsskjeer is the Norwegian term for disposable spoons, i.e., spoons intended for one-time use. They are a form of engangsprodukter (single-use items) commonly used in catering, take-away meals, events, and travel when washing facilities or return logistics are impractical.

Materials and design vary. The majority of engangsskjeer are plastic, often made from polypropylene. Other options include wooden or bamboo spoons, paper-based designs, or compostable plastics such as polylactic acid (PLA) or bagasse. Disposable spoons are typically inexpensive, lightweight, and designed for short-term use.

Environmental considerations are central to discussions about engangsskjeer. Plastic versions contribute to waste and litter and may be difficult to recycle when contaminated with food. Compostable variants only break down under appropriate industrial composting conditions, and mislabeling or lack of access to suitable facilities can limit their environmental benefits. As a result, many municipalities encourage reducing usage, reusing cutlery, or switching to reusable or properly certified compostable options where feasible.

Regulation and policy around engangsskjeer vary by country but follow a broader trend to curb plastic waste. In Europe, the Single-Use Plastics Directive and related national measures address plastic cutlery, with several jurisdictions phasing out or restricting their sale and use. Norway, as part of the European Economic Area, implements similar restrictions and waste-management goals.

Alternatives and best practices include promoting reusable cutlery, providing clearly labeled, certified compostable options, and ensuring proper disposal. Consumers and businesses are encouraged to minimize single-use variants and choose end-of-life options with the lowest environmental impact.
