Engangsplastik

Engangsplastik, or single-use plastic, refers to plastic products designed to be used once and then discarded. This category covers a wide range of items produced for short-term use, such as plastic bags, drinking straws, cutlery, plates, cups, take-away containers, yogurt and other food packaging, film wrap, and blister packs. They are distinguished from durable plastics intended for repeated use or long service life.

Most engangsplastik is made from polymers such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), or polystyrene (PS). Some items are marketed as biodegradable or compostable plastics (for example PLA) but the speed and conditions required for their breakdown vary; many require industrial composting facilities and will not readily degrade in the natural environment or home compost.

Environmental impact: engangsplastik contributes to waste and litter, accumulating in landfills, waterways, and oceans. It degrades slowly into microplastics that can enter ecosystems and food chains. Production and transport of single-use plastics also consume energy and emit greenhouse gases; the short life span contrasts with high cumulative waste volumes.

Waste management and policy: recycling rates for single-use plastics are generally low, with many items being downcycled or incinerated. Regions have introduced bans, charges, or restrictions on specific items (for example plastic bags and cutlery) and implemented deposit-return schemes for beverage containers. Producers may bear responsibility for end-of-life management under extended producer responsibility schemes. Policy tends to target reducing reliance on engangsplastik while promoting reuse and better design.

Alternatives and trends: emphasis on reusable items (bags, bottles, containers), alternative materials, and redesigned packaging to support a circular economy. Consumer choices, improved labeling, and municipal recycling infrastructure influence the effectiveness of engangsplastik reductions.
