Origin and meaning: The term appears to draw on Baltic linguistic roots, combining elements related to “self” and “sign” or “indication.” It first circulated in informal online forums in the 2010s and has since appeared in blog posts and conference abstracts. There is no formal standard definition, and usage varies by community.

Mechanisms and use: A typical eneseviidet involves a public post or pledge that specifies commitments or identifiers (for example, “I will donate monthly” or “I will correct misinformation”). Recipients are expected to hold the author accountable; supporters may reinforce behavior with feedback and encouragement. Platforms often reward transparency but can also encourage performative or rushed commitments.

Criticism and limitations: Critics caution that eneseviidet can devolve into performative signaling rather than genuine change, with privacy and boundary concerns. It may also be exploited by cliques or coercive groups to police belonging or enforce conformity.
