They include conductors, insulators, semiconductors, dielectrics and photoactive materials, with properties tailored through composition, crystal structure, and processing history.

Key properties for electronic materials are band structure and charge-carrier mobility, dielectric strength and permittivity, optical absorption and emission, thermal conductivity, and chemical stability. The band gap determines electrical behavior; mobility affects switching speeds; breakdown field sets voltage tolerance; thermal conductivity controls heat management in devices.

Common materials span metals and compounds. Silicon remains dominant in integrated circuits; compound semiconductors such as gallium arsenide, gallium nitride and silicon carbide enable high-speed and high-power applications; transparent conducting oxides, oxides like silicon dioxide and aluminum oxide serve as insulators and dielectrics; organic polymers and perovskites offer flexible or tunable optoelectronic properties.

Production routes include crystal growth and epitaxy, such as Czochralski pulling, float-zone refining, and molecular beam or metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. Device fabrication combines doping, lithography, etching, deposition and annealing to form active regions, contacts and interconnects. Material quality governs performance, yield and reliability.

Applications span integrated circuits, memory devices, photovoltaics, light-emitting devices, sensors and microelectromechanical systems. Ongoing trends focus on wide-bandgap materials for power electronics, two-dimensional materials for nanoscale devices, and perovskites for cost-effective solar cells and LEDs, alongside advances in heterostructures and flexible electronics.
