Wide bandgap refers to semiconductor materials whose fundamental energy gap is larger than that of silicon, typically defined as bandgap energies greater than about 2 eV. The larger bandgap enables devices that tolerate higher voltages and temperatures and can operate with lower intrinsic leakage at elevated temperatures, making wide-bandgap materials attractive for power electronics, RF, and optoelectronic applications.

The most mature wide‑bandgap materials are silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN). Other materials with wide bandgaps include gallium oxide (Ga2O3), aluminum nitride (AlN), and diamond. SiC and GaN have established manufacturing ecosystems and are used in power conversion, inverters, and high-frequency amplifiers; Ga2O3 and AlN are advancing rapidly, while diamond offers exceptional thermal conductivity.

Key device advantages derive from the high breakdown electric field and high-temperature stability associated with large bandgaps. Devices can block higher voltages with thinner layers, enabling smaller, lighter power electronics. The reduced intrinsic carrier concentration at elevated temperatures allows operation without excessive leakage, but processing challenges such as achieving reliable p-type doping (in some materials) and defect control remain.

Applications include power electronics for electric vehicles and renewable energy systems, RF power amplifiers, and UV optoelectronics such as LEDs and photodetectors based on GaN and related materials. Thermal management and material quality are critical in realizing the performance benefits in real devices.
