Electromechanical refers to systems or devices that involve the interaction of electrical and mechanical phenomena, typically converting electrical energy into mechanical motion or using mechanical work to influence electrical signals. The term covers components, subsystems, and complete machines in which electrical inputs control mechanical outputs, and vice versa, including actuators, sensors, and controllers integrated into a single unit or system.

Key principles include energy conversion through electromagnetic fields, signal transduction, and feedback control. Common constituents are electric motors (DC, induction, and synchronous types), actuators such as solenoids and piezoelectric devices, relays, gear trains, and position or speed sensors. Many electromechanical systems employ sensors and controllers to regulate motion, force, speed, and position.

Electromechanical devices vary by application. Motors provide continuous rotation or torque; relays switch circuits using electromagnetism; solenoids create linear force; servo and stepper motors enable precise positioning; piezo actuators offer fine, rapid micro-motion. Transducers convert between electrical and mechanical energy, enabling sensing, feedback, and control.

Applications span manufacturing automation, robotics, automotive systems (power windows, seat adjustment, actuators), consumer appliances, medical devices, aerospace, and instrumentation. The field emphasizes reliable actuation, compact packaging, and energy efficiency, often blending mechanical design with embedded electronics and software.

Historically, electromechanical technology emerged in the 19th and early 20th centuries with electric motors, relays, and telegraph equipment. Advances in control theory, sensors, and power electronics accelerated the development of integrated electromechanical systems, a trend that continues as mechatronics and smart materials augment traditional devices.
