Eldronic is a fictional universe and multimedia franchise created by the British writer and game designer Ian Livingstone, best known for his work on the Elfquest series and Advanced Dungeons & Dragons modules. The Eldronic setting is a blend of fantasy, science fiction, and horror, centered around a post-apocalyptic world where humanity has been devastated by a mysterious, alien force known as the Eldronic.

The story begins with the arrival of the Eldronic, a sentient, parasitic entity that infiltrates human minds, corrupting them and turning them into mindless, violent husks. The few survivors who resist the Eldronic’s influence form a resistance movement, struggling to uncover the truth behind the invasion and find a way to stop it. The narrative explores themes of survival, corruption, and the struggle between humanity and an incomprehensible alien threat.

Eldronic was originally conceived as a tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) system, published in 1986 by Games Workshop under the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons license. The game introduced a unique ruleset designed to simulate the horror and psychological terror of the Eldronic invasion, emphasizing survival mechanics, sanity loss, and moral dilemmas. Unlike traditional fantasy RPGs, Eldronic incorporated elements of cosmic horror, cyberpunk, and post-apocalyptic storytelling, making it distinct from other games of its era.

The setting was later expanded through novels, comics, and other media, though the franchise remained relatively niche compared to other Livingstone projects. The core premise revolves around the idea of an existential threat that rewrites reality itself, forcing characters to adapt to a world where logic and sanity are constantly challenged. The Eldronic’s nature is deliberately ambiguous, leaving much open to interpretation, which added to the game’s atmospheric dread.
