Efnisien

Efnisien is a character from J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium, appearing in The Silmarillion. He is a prominent figure in the tale of the Children of Húrin and the adventures of his half-brother, Túrin Turambar. Efnisien is the son of Gethron and Morwen, and the younger brother of Túrin. Unlike his more renowned sibling, Efnisien is depicted as being physically weak and of a less noble countenance, a fact that often fueled his resentment and bitterness.

Efnisien's most defining characteristic is his cruel and mischievous nature. He possesses a wicked tongue and a deep-seated malice, often delighting in causing pain and suffering to others, especially his own family. This malevolence is attributed in part to his lineage, as he was conceived by Gethron and Morwen after they had been captured and held by Morgoth, the first Dark Lord. This dark heritage is presented as a significant influence on his disposition.

His actions often lead to tragic consequences. He famously betrays Túrin to Morgoth, revealing his hiding place and thus directly contributing to the doom that befell his brother and their family. Efnisien's betrayal is driven by his jealousy and hatred, a testament to his corrupted spirit. Despite his villainous role, Efnisien serves as a foil to Túrin, highlighting the contrast between good and evil and the destructive power of malice. His fate is tied to that of Túrin, ultimately perishing with him in their final confrontation with the dragon Glaurung.
