These containers are typically constructed from durable, non-toxic materials such as stainless steel, food‑grade plastic, or fiberglass. They can be either freestanding or modular, allowing aquaculturists to assemble large rearing arrays that provide a controlled environment for eel growth.

The core features of an eelkasten include a removable or adjustable dividers that can isolate batches of eels at different life stages—larval, juvenile, and mature. Many units incorporate filtration systems and circulation pumps that maintain optimal water quality and temperature, simulating the eel’s natural riverine habitats.
