Anguilla

Anguilla is a British overseas territory located in the Caribbean, part of the Leeward Islands in the northern Lesser Antilles. It consists of the main Anguilla Island and numerous small islets and cays. The capital and seat of government is The Valley. The territory covers about 91 square kilometers and has a population of around 15,000 people. English is the official language, with local Anguillian speech and Creole influences also heard.

Geographically, Anguilla is a low-lying, limestone island characterized by white-sand beaches, coral reefs, and clear tropical waters. Its economy is heavily oriented toward tourism, which centers on luxury resort stays, beaches, and marine activities, complemented by fishing and, to a lesser extent, offshore financial services. The island’s currency is the East Caribbean dollar, with the U.S. dollar widely accepted in practice.

Historically, Anguilla was inhabited by Arawak and later Carib peoples before European contact. It was settled by English colonists in the 17th century and remained under British authority. In 1967, Anguilla briefly sought separation from the neighboring island of Saint Kitts and Nevis, leading to a period of political unrest. In 1980, Anguilla established its own constitutional status as a separate British Overseas Territory, with internal self-government while the United Kingdom handles defense and foreign affairs.

Government and politics follow a constitutional framework with a Governor representing the British monarch and a locally elected legislative assembly. The Premier serves as the head of government, and the territory maintains its own internal administration within the framework of its status as a British Overseas Territory.

Transport infrastructure includes Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport and ferry links, notably to Saint Martin, supporting the territory’s tourism-driven economy.
