EMI-håndtering, or electromagnetic interference management, is the discipline of reducing unwanted electromagnetic disturbances in electronic systems to protect function, safety, and regulatory compliance. EMI can originate from switching power supplies, motor drives, wireless transmitters, data lines, and external radio sources, and disturbances can be radiated or conducted through power, signal, or enclosure paths.

Mitigation techniques include shielding and enclosure design (conductive housings or coatings), filtering on power and signal lines, robust grounding and bonding, and careful PCB layout with solid ground planes and short return paths. Isolation where needed (optocouplers, transformers, digital isolators), ferrite beads, decoupling capacitors, and prudent cable routing to minimize loop areas also help. Placement, thermal management, and controlled impedance traces matter when high-speed signals are present.

EMI handling spans the product lifecycle. It begins in the design phase with risk assessment and EMI budgeting, continues through development with pre-compliance testing, and concludes with full EMC testing and documentation of conformity. Regulatory references commonly include CISPR 22/32, EN 55022/55032, FCC Part 15, and IEC 61000-series standards for emissions and immunity. Clear documentation typically comprises EMC test reports and a declaration of conformity.

Applications span consumer electronics, automotive, medical devices, and aerospace, where reliable operation and market access depend on predictable EMI behavior. The goal is to balance performance, cost, and safety while ensuring robust immunity to external disturbances and acceptable emissions to protect surrounding equipment.
