Dämpningsupphängning, often translated as damping suspension or shock absorption system, refers to a mechanical system designed to absorb and dissipate kinetic energy from shocks and vibrations. Its primary function is to improve ride comfort and vehicle stability by controlling the oscillations of the suspension. Without effective damping, a vehicle would continue to bounce excessively after encountering a bump, leading to a jarring and uncomfortable experience, as well as reduced tire contact with the road.

The most common type of damping suspension utilizes a hydraulic shock absorber, also known as a damper. This device consists of a piston moving within a cylinder filled with hydraulic fluid. As the suspension compresses or extends, the piston forces the fluid through small orifices. The resistance to this fluid flow creates a damping force that opposes the motion. The rate at which the fluid is forced through these orifices determines the damping characteristics of the shock absorber.

Damping suspension systems are crucial in a wide range of applications, including automobiles, motorcycles, bicycles, and even in industrial machinery. In vehicles, they work in conjunction with springs to manage the forces exerted by uneven road surfaces. The springs absorb the initial impact, while the dampers control the subsequent oscillations, preventing them from becoming uncontrolled.
