Däcktrycksövervakningssystem, often abbreviated as TPMS, is a safety system integrated into modern vehicles designed to monitor the air pressure within the tires. The primary function of TPMS is to alert the driver when tire pressure drops below a safe or optimal level, which can negatively impact vehicle handling, fuel efficiency, and tire longevity.

There are two main types of TPMS: direct and indirect. Direct TPMS utilizes pressure sensors installed inside each wheel that transmit real-time pressure data wirelessly to the vehicle's onboard computer. This system provides highly accurate readings for individual tires. Indirect TPMS, on the other hand, infers tire pressure by monitoring the rotational speed of the wheels using the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) sensors. If a tire is underinflated, it will rotate at a different speed than the others, triggering the warning light. While simpler and less expensive to manufacture, indirect systems are generally less precise and may not detect slow leaks as effectively as direct systems.

A properly inflated tire is crucial for several reasons. Underinflated tires can lead to increased rolling resistance, resulting in poorer fuel economy. They also wear out more quickly and unevenly, reducing their lifespan. Furthermore, significantly underinflated tires can overheat, increasing the risk of a blowout, a potentially dangerous situation. The TPMS warning light, typically an icon resembling a deflated tire with an exclamation mark inside, serves as a vital reminder for drivers to check and adjust their tire pressures. Regular inspection and maintenance of tire pressure, even with a functioning TPMS, remain essential for safe and efficient driving.
