Dysedesign is a term used in contemporary design discourse to describe works that intentionally embrace dysfunction, friction, or misalignment in order to critique prevailing design norms, consumer culture, or ethical issues. Proponents argue that such work reveals hidden costs of standard interfaces and products, and can foreground concerns such as privacy, accessibility, and sustainability. The aim is often to provoke reflection and dialogue rather than to provide a ready-made utilitarian solution.

The term has appeared within critical and speculative design circles since the early 21st century, where it is discussed alongside ideas like critical design and anti-design. Dysedesign is typically framed as a discipline-oriented practice rather than a consumer-facing genre, emphasizing critique, interpretation, and context over seamless performance.

Forms and examples of dysedesign can vary widely. Digital interfaces might employ deliberate navigational traps or deceptive cues to critique manipulation in user experiences. Physical products may feature nonfunctional or misleading elements to comment on planned obsolescence or material waste. Graphic work can use illegible typography or deliberately confusing layouts to question information hierarchy and readability. Public installations can use misaligned or jarring aesthetics to disrupt routine interactions and invite social or political reflection.

Reception of dysedesign is mixed. Supporters see it as a valuable extension of design critique that reveals assumptions embedded in everyday objects and systems. Critics warn that extreme forms can alienate audiences, hinder safety or usability, and blur lines between art and responsible practice.
