Dykdräkter

Dykdräkter, often referred to as wetsuits or drysuits depending on their design and function, are essential garments for underwater activities. They serve primarily to provide thermal insulation, protecting the wearer from the cold temperatures of the water. Beyond insulation, dykdräkter also offer protection against abrasion from rough surfaces and minor impacts.

The most common type is the wetsuit. Wetsuits are typically made from neoprene, a type of synthetic rubber. They work by trapping a thin layer of water between the suit and the wearer's skin. This water is then warmed by body heat, creating an insulating barrier. Wetsuits come in various thicknesses, with thicker suits offering more warmth and typically being used in colder water. They are available in full-body suits, shorties, and separate tops and bottoms.

Drysuits, on the other hand, are designed to keep the wearer completely dry. They are constructed from waterproof materials and feature watertight seals at the neck, wrists, and ankles. Air is often intentionally added to a drysuit to provide insulation and buoyancy. Drysuits are generally used in very cold water environments where a wetsuit would not provide sufficient protection. They are more complex to use and maintain than wetsuits, often requiring specialized training.

The choice between a wetsuit and a drysuit depends on factors such as water temperature, the type of activity (e.g., scuba diving, surfing, freediving), and personal preference regarding comfort and thermal regulation. Proper fit is crucial for both types of dykdräkter to ensure optimal performance and comfort.
