Dungarees

Dungarees are a type of durable workwear traditionally made from denim or a fabric called dungaree. The term commonly refers to denim trousers with a heavy-duty construction, or to bib-overalls (overalls with shoulder straps). In American English, dungarees most often denote the overalls, while jeans are more often used for denim trousers without a bib.

Fabric and construction: Dungaree fabric is a sturdy cotton twill with a diagonal weave, historically dyed with indigo. Garments typically feature reinforced seams, riveted pockets, and metal hardware at stress points. They are designed for durability and ease of repair, with broad legs and roomy pockets in many traditional styles.

History: The design arose in Europe as rugged workwear and was associated with miners, farmers, and factory workers in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The word 'dungaree' is of uncertain origin, commonly linked to cotton fabrics imported from India and to a place name; over time, the term has come to describe the garment type itself. Modern use and variations: Today dungarees remain both a practical work garment and a fashion item. Variants include bib-overalls and trousers made from denim or other sturdy fabrics; colors beyond blue are common.
