Biboveralls, or bib overalls, are a garment consisting of pants with a bib front and shoulder straps that fasten to the bib with buttons, buckles, or clasps. The design provides full torso and leg coverage and keeps the wearer’s hands free, making them a traditional choice for manual labor. The bib usually features a chest pocket and, in many models, additional pockets on the front of the legs; many variants include reinforced knees, double fabric in high-wear areas, hammer loops, and tool pockets.

Materials and variations: They are commonly made from denim or heavy cotton canvas (duck). Weights range from mid to heavy, and options include insulated or waterproof versions. Closures may be side-fastening or front-button closures, with adjustable shoulder straps. In fashion contexts, diverse fabrics, colors, and prints are common.

History and use: Overalls originated as durable workwear in 19th-century United States. The riveted bib overalls were popularized by Levi Strauss & Co., in partnership with Jacob Davis, in the 1870s, and the garment spread to miners, farmers, and factory workers. In the 20th century, overalls became a staple of workwear brands such as Dickies and Carhartt and subsequently entered mainstream fashion, appearing in various styles for men, women, and children.

Regional terminology and modern context: In the United Kingdom, the term dungarees is commonly used for denim overalls, while in other regions overalls may refer to separate garments. Today bib overalls remain in use as protective workwear and as casual or fashion items across many cultures.
