Droads

Droads, also known as Driders, are a fictional monstrous race appearing in the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons and its associated lore. They are a unique and fearsome combination of a drow (dark elf) and a giant spider. Typically, a droa has the upper body of a drow, complete with their humanoid head, torso, and arms, emerging from the cephalothorax of a monstrous spider, which forms the creature's lower body and legs. This hybrid form grants them both the dexterity of an elf and the predatory abilities of a spider.

The creation of droads is often depicted as the result of a dark ritual or curse, a punishment or transformation imposed by Lolth, the chaotic evil spider goddess worshipped by the drow. Those who displease Lolth, particularly priestesses who fail in their duties or are deemed unworthy, may be transformed into droads as a permanent mark of her displeasure. This transformation is usually irreversible and a source of great suffering and hatred for the victim.

Droads retain their drow intelligence and cunning but are often driven by immense rage and a deep-seated loathing for their monstrous form. They are formidable combatants, capable of spitting webs, venom, and wielding their multiple spider legs for attack. Their drow heritage also means they possess innate magical abilities, such as darkness spells, which they can use to their advantage in combat. They are usually found in the Underdark, the subterranean realm of the drow, often lurking in their lairs, waiting for unsuspecting prey.
